I remember those days vividly—working 12-hour overnight shifts as a scientist from 7 pm to 7 am, with a 45-minute commute on top of that. Coaching gymnastics on the side, somehow squeezing in sleep, and trying to maintain some semblance of a healthy diet and workout routine—it all felt impossible. I’d often ask myself, How on earth am I going to keep this up? The mental load was overwhelming, and it seemed like my personal goals were always the first to get sacrificed.

But then I had a moment of clarity: If not now, then when? If I kept pushing my goals to the back burner, what would happen? Would I wake up one day and wonder, Where did my life go?

One day, I just decided. No more waiting, no more excuses—this was the time. I started fitting in my workouts at midnight during my lunch break (and don’t worry, it was safe!). I packed my lunch, and I made the conscious choice to put myself first. And guess what? People started noticing.

That decision to take control of my life led to some incredible things—I won Miss Fitness America during that insanely busy time and even got on American Ninja Warrior. And it all started with a single decision to do something for me.

And guess what? You can do this too. 

5 Tips to Get Started on Your Journey Back to You

  1. Take Baby Steps, Not Giant Leaps
    It’s tempting to go all in and try to overhaul your entire routine overnight, but that’s a recipe for burnout. Instead, start with small, manageable changes. Focus on one habit at a time—whether it’s adding a short workout, improving your sleep, or prepping your meals—and build from there. Remember, consistency over time beats intensity in the short term.

  2. Pre-Plan the Best You Can
    Life is busy, and it’s easy to let your personal goals slip through the cracks. But a little pre-planning can make all the difference. Set aside some time each week to plan your meals, schedule your workouts, and even lay out your workout clothes the night before. When you’ve already made the decision in advance, you’re less likely to skip out when things get hectic.

  3. Set Realistic, Achievable Goals
    Success breeds success, so set goals that you know you can achieve. Start with small milestones that will give you quick wins, like completing three workouts in a week or prepping your lunches for the next three days. As you hit these smaller goals, your confidence will grow, and you’ll be motivated to keep going.

  4. Prioritize Self-Care
    Your career and responsibilities are important, but so are you. Make self-care non-negotiable. This means getting enough sleep, managing stress, and making time for activities that rejuvenate you—whether that’s a quiet morning coffee, a walk in nature, or a few minutes of meditation. When you’re well-rested and mentally strong, everything else falls into place more easily.

  5. Find a Support System
    You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s joining a community of like-minded women, finding an accountability partner, or working with a coach who understands your challenges, having support can make all the difference. Surround yourself with people who encourage you, lift you up, and remind you that you’re capable of anything you set your mind to.

Getting started is often the hardest part, but with these tips, you’ll be well on your way to feeling stronger, more confident, and more in control of your life. You’ve got this! πŸ’ͺ
