So... I almost died during an all-out mile…πŸ˜…

Okay, that's exaggerating, but kind of…and it was pretty embarrassing. Let me explain.

As many of you know, I've been known for my athletic achievements. As a 6x American Ninja Warrior, Miss Fitness America 2016, and a college gymnast, people often look at me and say, "Damn, she's fit. This must be so easy for her."

Well, those titles only tell part of the story. For me, I've never been the person who was just "naturally talented." I didn’t just wake up and become a Ninja Warrior or win a fitness competition. I had to work my ass off, putting in hours and hours each week to see results. I had to push past costume malfunctions, a broken foot, tearing my ACL, and so much more.

My success wasn't due to natural talent; it was because of my resilience and refusal to give up when things got hard.

But there's one thing I still haven't been able to crack all these years: running. πŸƒ‍♀️

It all started in elementary school when I couldn’t run a mile under 8 minutes for a physical fitness test. I felt like everyone around me could do it so easily.

Here I was, a girl who's "supposed to be fit," and I legit couldn’t do it.

Mind you, I'm short—5 feet tall—and these little legs need to work super hard to go faster πŸ˜…

Last week, my friend Matt Choi invited me to do an all-out mile, where you run a mile as fast as you can, and he documents it.

He set a goal time for me: 8 minutes and 15 seconds. When I run now, my fastest is around 9:30 or 10 minutes.

We started with a warm-up and began running together. The first two laps felt good, and Matt was super encouraging. Then, in those last two laps, I started dying πŸ₯΅

It wasn’t that my legs were tired; it was my breathing. I felt like I was going to throw up and pass out. I kept going even though I wanted to stop.

I made weird noises—yelling, screaming, almost crying. I don’t know who I became or what those noises were doing for me, but it was not pretty. It was ugly…really ugly πŸ˜‚

I got to the last lap and started to pick up the pace. I pushed myself, yelled, and when we stopped, I almost threw up.

Poor Matt was probably like, "Who even is this girl? What were those noises?" 

I finished in 8:30, which wasn’t the goal he set, but damn, I was proud of that.πŸ˜‚

Even though I wanted to throw up and almost passed out, I was fired up. Adrenaline took over, and I felt newfound confidence from pushing through and doing something I thought was impossible.

I’m sharing this because for me, it's running, but for you, maybe it’s getting your first pull-up. Maybe the way I feel about running is how you feel about pull-ups. All you're missing is a little belief from someone (like me) and the courage to just get started.

Work on something hard each day. It might not be pretty, and might have you screaming and making loud noises once in a while, but push through it and keep going.
