As a former college gymnast and athlete, I can vividly recall being told that once I hit the “college” level, I was too “old” to ever compete in the Olympics. For years, aging was viewed as a barrier in athletics, especially in gymnastics. The notion was that after a certain age, pursuing athletic dreams was out of reach.
But here’s the truth: I’m 34 years old now, and I’ve discovered strength in my 30s that I never knew was possible. I’ve had to adapt and change my approach, but I’ve become stronger both physically and mentally. And it’s not just me; I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s achieve the same!
This year’s Olympic gymnastics team is redefining what it means to be an athlete at any age. They’re proving that age is just a number and that they are getting better with age. These women have pushed past adversity, shattered age barriers, and redefined what’s possible.
Simone Biles
Simone Biles, at 27 years old, returned to the Olympic stage with unmatched grace and resilience. After taking a step back due to mental health struggles and experiencing "the twisties," a condition where gymnasts lose their spatial awareness, she came back stronger than ever. Her journey back to the top wasn’t just about winning medals; it was about winning the battle within herself and showing us all the power of perseverance and self-belief. Her story is a testament to the importance of prioritizing mental health and resilience. π
Suni Lee
Suni Lee’s journey is equally inspiring. She faced kidney disease, a condition that could have easily ended her Olympic dreams. But instead of giving up, she pushed through, training and competing while managing her health. Her determination and strength are a reminder that obstacles can be overcome with courage and perseverance. Suni’s story is about rising above the challenges life throws at you and proving that with the right mindset, you can achieve the impossible. π
