How to Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Own Success

 

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get talked about enough:

Self-sabotage.

It’s wild, isn’t it? How we say we want something… and then do everything in our power to block it from happening.

Whether it’s procrastination, perfectionism, playing small, or waiting to feel "ready"—we’ve all been there.

This week, I was reflecting on my own habits and caught myself doing it again:

  • Avoiding the tasks that actually move my business forward

  • Trying to do everything myself instead of leading my team

  • Delaying big bold steps in my speaking career by overthinking outreach

And that’s the thing with self-sabotage: it doesn’t always look dramatic.

It can look like "being busy." It can look like over-editing that email instead of sending it. It can look like waiting for the “perfect” time to start.

But underneath it all? Fear.

Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of being seen. Fear of change.

And often, that fear shows up right before we’re about to do something BIG.

Because self-sabotage is really just your brain’s last-ditch effort to keep you in the comfort zone.

But here’s the truth: Growth doesn’t live there.

So this week, I took a hard look at where I was sabotaging… and I shifted.


A Week of Shifting + Showing Up

Last week was wild. I got to do a creative shoot that involved hanging from a pull-up bar, passing water bottles mid-air, and getting completely in the zone.

It was one of those "wow" moments—getting paid to do something I love.

But I was also sick. Like, body-aches, allergy-flaring, need-to-lie-down sick.

And in that moment, I caught myself: I could complain… or I could be grateful.

Grateful for this opportunity. Grateful for what my body could still do. Grateful for the team supporting me.

And in that mindset shift, I was able to show up as the version of me that doesn’t self-sabotage. The version of me that leads.

So this week, I:

  • Handed off backend tasks to my incredible assistant

  • Trusted my team to handle DMs + workshop setup

  • Focused fully on creating, speaking, and leading

Because those are the things that move the mission forward.

And self-sabotage has no seat at that table.


Why We Sabotage: A Deeper Look

Self-sabotage often stems from old stories:

  • “If I succeed, people will expect more from me.”

  • “If I try and fail, I’ll look stupid.”

  • “I’m not really good enough anyway.”

It might show up as:

  • Chronic procrastination

  • Overcommitting to everything except your goals

  • Feeling exhausted… but never really making progress

  • Starting new things, but never finishing them

These behaviors create a false sense of control. Because if you ruin the opportunity… at least no one else gets to do it first.

But what if we stopped that cycle today?

What if we trusted that success is safe? That showing up big won’t break us—but free us?

That’s the shift I’m walking through… and I want you to come with me.
