It started with a storm—literally.
Someone had warned me to move my car inside because hail was coming to Austin. I ignored it. No big deal, I thought.
But when I walked outside to finally move it I had realized I had left my sunroof open 😳 and opened my car door, it was like opening the door to a fish tank, with some hail sprinkled in. My seats were soaked. Everything was flooded.
I honestly laughed for a second as I drove my car to the underground lot....def a bit frustrated with myself..
Just when I thought I had shaken it off, I got into my (still-damp) car the next day… and realized one of my tires was flat.
And then.. I honestly let it ruin my day..
Not just the moment.
Not just the morning.
But the whole damn day.
Because I had plans. I had a to-do list. I had energy. And then life interrupted.
And the truth? I let the flat tire and flooded seats dictate how I felt. I gave away my power. I spiraled into irritation and disappointment.
But here’s where things started to shift.
My friend came over and showed me how to plug the hole in the tire, there was a huge nail sticking out of it—something I had never done before. I patched it. Myself. And I realized…
There was so much I could do.
The weather? I couldn’t control that.
The storm? Couldn’t stop it.
But I could choose how I responded next.
So often, the things that derail us aren’t the “big” things—they’re our expectations.
We plan to do 10 things in a day.
We expect ourselves to be perfect.
We imagine a clear path with no setbacks.
And when life does what life does… we crumble.
But what if it’s not about perfection?
What if it’s about progress?
They were feeling the same things.
Overwhelmed. Burnt out. Trying to juggle caregiving, work, home, health—and feeling like they’re failing at all of it.
One woman said, “I just don’t know how to do it all. I feel like I’m losing myself.”
I asked her, “Are you trying to create perfect balance—or work-life integration?”
She paused.
Then she said, “Oh. That’s a better way to put it.”
Integration isn’t about doing it all.
It’s about integrating what matters.
It’s about choosing one small thing you can win at—today.
My speaker coach told me, “Plant 20 seeds a day. Reach out to 20 event planners.”
And while I knew it was good advice, I froze.
Twenty felt like too much. I started spiraling. Overthinking. Feeling behind.
She saw it in my eyes and said,
“Angela—what if we just start with two?”
That clicked.
Because two felt doable.
And doable meant I could win.
When you feel stuck, it’s not because you’re incapable.
It’s usually because the bar you’re trying to jump is so high you can’t see the first rung of the ladder.
So lower the bar.
Take one step.
Then another.
Set yourself up to WIN!
This applies to everything:
Your mindset.
Your goals.
Your fitness.
Your emotions.
You’re not going to go from flat-tire-meltdown to motivational-magic in 10 minutes. But maybe you can…
Make a cup of coffee.
Text a friend.
Send one email.
Do one pull-up hang.
That’s momentum.
That’s what builds strength.
That’s what keeps you in the game.
So if you’re in the thick of it right now, here are your steps:
1. Pause the spiral.
Feel your feelings. Don’t rush them. But stop them from spiraling. Acknowledge: “This is a moment. It’s not forever.” Set a deadline on it, you don't need to be stuck their forever!
2. Take one small step.
Not ten. Not the “perfect” one. Just a simple, clear win. What would make you feel a little better today?
3. Lower the bar.
If your goal feels paralyzing, it’s too big. Shrink it. Make it simple enough to start. One small step will get you closer to your goal than you think.
4. Celebrate the tiny wins.
Plugging a tire. Hanging from a pull-up bar. Reaching out to two people. These wins matter more than you think.
5. Ask the question.
“What if it all goes right?”
And mean it.
