This Isn’t About Losing Weight… It’s About What You GAIN

Let’s be honest—how often do you hear (or say) something like this:

“I want to lose weight.”
“I want to lose the flab.”
“I want to lose the extra inches.”

Sound familiar?

These phrases aren’t just goals—they carry a heavy weight of negativity. They subtly tell us we’re not enough as we are.

But what if we flipped the script?
What if, instead of focusing on what you need to lose, you shifted your focus to what you can GAIN?

Let me take you back to a time in my own life where this shift completely changed everything.


The Journey That Led Me Here

After college, I had no idea HOW to work out. I didn’t have a coach, a plan, or a clear goal. Like so many women, I defaulted to doing random workouts and relied heavily on cardio.

I wasn’t feeling “fat,” but I was definitely feeling “fluffy.” You know the feeling, right? That unsettled sense when you look in the mirror and just see ugh.

At the time, I was working 12-hour overnight shifts as a scientist, and I stepped on the scale during one of those long nights. It read 115 pounds, but when I looked in the mirror, all I saw was yuck.

Then, I started training for Ninja Warrior, and everything shifted.

For the first time, I wasn’t focused on what I wanted to lose. I didn’t care about my fluff or the number on the scale. My goal became strength—pure and simple. I needed to be strong enough to crush the obstacles on the course.

And you know what happened after a few months of training?

  • I felt fast, strong, and mobile.
  • I had more energy than I’d had in years.
  • I was PROUD of myself because I was working toward something bigger.

Here’s the kicker: When I finally stepped on the scale, I weighed 126 pounds—11 pounds heavier than before. But I felt better, stronger, and more confident than I ever had at 115.

This is why I coach the way I do today. It’s not about what you lose—it’s about everything you gain.


FUNNY Side Note: Friendsgiving Chaos

So, quick detour here because I need to tell you about my Friendsgiving fail last week.

Your girl was in charge of the meat (which, for the record, I DID NOT volunteer for). I figured I’d make it easy on myself and grab something “already cooked” from Whole Foods.

Except, here’s the kicker: Apparently, “already cooked” still means you need to cook it for FOUR HOURS in the oven. 😳

I didn’t realize this until the LAST minute when everyone was already done with their sides. Cue me in full panic mode, hustling to Uber meat from a BBQ place just in time.

Moral of the story? Always check the fine print on “ready-to-eat” food! 🙈


Why Pull-Ups Are the Ultimate Gain
